I Have An Old Car How Should I Maintain It?

One of the common mistakes that people make is they assume that older vehicles don’t need the same attention that newer cars do. The truth is, if you maintain an old car, you are more likely to have it lasting you for years to come, rather than encountering an expensive repair later on. To properly care for and to maintain your vehicle, you need to pay close attention to a few simple rules. That means don’t understand the importance of the tyres, engine and other parts people take for granted.

Maintenance on your older vehicle should focus on a few key areas. They are:

  • Brakes
  • Fluids
  • Interior Parts
  • Oil
  • Tires
  • Windows

As you know, you don’t underestimate the importance of tyres on your vehicle. They should always be inflated to the specifications of the manufacturer. When their tread wears thin, especially when the indicators are showing, you need to replace them. Ideally, you will be checking them weekly.

You should also change oil and air filters on a regular basis. As you likely know, the oil in your vehicle is like the blood in your body. Without it, your vehicle isn’t going to move. This oil should be changed about every 3,000 miles. But don’t wait until then to check your oil levels. This should be inspected at least once a week. When you have your oil changed, also ask them to change the air filters and ask about the condition of your gas filter.

Before driving anywhere, always check your windows and mirrors. Ensure they are clean so you can see out of them and verify there is no visible damage. If you notice any small cracks, take care of them early on. Waiting too long can lead to other problems with the glass. Take a moment to also inspect your windshield wipers. They should be free of cracking and drying. If you notice them degrading, it is a good choice to replace them. Wiper blades tend to be relatively affordable and the old ones just pull off, while the new ones just slip right on.

Always test the lights. Check to ensure that your turn signals aren’t burned out and that both headlights are working. If you notice one is burnt out, replace the bulbs. If there continues to be a problem, you can also test the fuses to determine if one has burned out.

Check your brakes, belts and battery on a routine basis. If you notice your brakes squealing when they are pressed, it means you need to have them replaced or serviced. Always inspect belts for any visible signs of damage and have them repaired so they don’t give out on you while you are driving your vehicle. While checking your battery to ensure it has a good charge and that there isn’t any corrosion on it.

You should always check your fluid levels to ensure that they are at the proper levels. It takes just a few minutes and can help to reduce the wear and tear on your vehicle. If you aren’t sure if your fluid levels are fine, a qualified mechanic can inspect them for you and top them up as needed.

Emissions testing will be required in some states, based on the age of your vehicle. If for some reason you do fail, it is ideal to bring it into a mechanic. This will be the fastest and most effective way to get your vehicle repaired so that it can pass a future inspections test.

You’ll find that with a little effort on your part, you can successfully maintain and keep your old car on the road. It helps to always have a qualified mechanic to inspect your vehicle to ensure that is it in peak working condition.
